Sophie qualified as an interpreter in 2012 through the postgraduate diploma at the University of Central Lancashire, and has been working freelance in London since then.
In her early career, much of the interpreting work Sophie carried out was linked with theatre, film and television. In recent years, her focus has shifted to work in the charity sector and specifically domestic abuse.
Sophie began working with the deaf community in 2001, volunteering as an English teacher at a school for deaf children in Sri Lanka for one year, with the organisation Project Trust. Sophie became immersed in the Sri Lankan deaf community and fluent in Sri Lankan sign language; leading her to return to Sri Lanka on a number of occasions for the next fourteen years. As well as volunteering at a deaf school, Sophie set up and ran a project with SLV Global, working with European deaf people volunteering in Sri Lanka.
She has also worked alongside deaf communities in Mexico, the Philippines, the United States, Japan and Uganda, and as a consultant for Volunteer Services Overseas (VSO).
In order to maintain the resilience needed to meet the demands of the job, Sophie undertakes professional clinical supervision every six weeks. She also reflects on her and others’ practices within the profession by attending peer support with a group of three other interpreters every four weeks.
